Underground boxing at Overthrow Boxing Club is a Sweat Report favorite. Read below to find out why:

Quick Deets:

  • Class Name: Underground Boxing
  • Location: NoHo/Bowery
  • Trainer: Reggie
  • Price per class: $36, but they do have packages that bring the price down.

The Space

  • Vibe: It’s unlike any studio in NYC. It’s Gritty, raw, and tough: there’s stickers all over the place, the walls are decorated in old newspapers, the heavy bags are held together with duct tape. It definitely brings out your inner badass.
  • Cleanliness: While the space is gritty, it’s pretty clean where it matters.
  • Showers: No showers
  • Rating: 10/10

Diversity + Inclusion

  • Instructor + staff diversity: There’s a wide range of teachers, mostly male, but all are or were professional boxers.
  • Diversity in the class: Class had a diverse set of classgoers of every color, shape, and size.
  • Rating: 8/10

The Workout

  • Best for: Intermediate and advanced. Beginners can take class as they do teach the basics, but the intensity of the workout is pretty high
  • Sweat level: High. Expect to walk out feeling sweaty.
  • Worth the price tag? $36 — Yes. If you’re looking for an actual boxing workout. This is your best bet in NYC
  • Rating: 9/10

Overall thoughts from The Sweat Report:

Overthrow is one of the few boxing studios in NYC where you spend the majority of your time actually boxing. Expect a tough workout where you’re moving 98% of the time. Class starts with a warm up before getting into shadow boxing for about half of the class. You learn a variety of boxing combinations in between cardio bursts of jumping jacks, jump squats, mountain climbers or whatever the instructors feel like shouting out. Then, the heavy bags come out and you’ll learn more combos in between cardio bursts. Not going to lie: It ain’t easy. By the end of class, you’re dripping in sweat.

Aside from the pure perfection that is the vibe and decor of Overthrow Boxing Club, one thing that sets this boxing studio apart is that you’ll actually do some boxing. The instructor comes around and helps class goers get the foundations of the punches correct, which is rare for a boxing class.

Pro tip: Gloves and hand wraps. They have gloves for rent, but do you really want to sweat in gloves that have been sweated in by countless people? Didn’t think so.
