Core SPX at Core Studio, Palo Alto

Core SPX focuses on Lagree Fitness using the Megaformer, which is a unique form of fitness that’s similar to reformer pilates — but like, on steroids.

CLASS: Core SPX

TRAINER: Carly E. She made the class challenging but fun — but she was also a stickler for form.

SWEAT:  8/10

LEVEL: Intermediate to advanced. This class will hit muscles you didn’t even know you had.

TOP 3 TAKEAWAYS:

  • Megaformer, mega workout —  The Megaformer is a machine with weights that makes simple moves challenging. At first look, it’s a bit intimidating (with all it’s nobs and handles), but once you get the hang of it, it’s super easy to manuever.
  • Gotta let it burn (slowly) — The moves are simple, but they’re meant to be done slowly. The slower the movement, the harder your muscles work, and the better the workout.
  • It’s a race — While the movements themselves are slow, the class goes fast — you transition from one move to the next, and not a minute is spared, not even for a designated water break.

MUSIC: The music was hard to hear over our screaming muscles.

BRING: A water bottle, a sweat towel, and treaded socks (yoga socks will do if you have them).

CLASSPASS: Yes

Pro Tip: If you start to feel your muscles shaking uncontrollably, that’s a good sign. It means you’re working your muscles to the point of fatigue — and that’s how growth happens!

THE WORK DETAILS

Core SPX focuses on Lagree Fitness using the Megaformer, which is a unique form of fitness that’s similar to reformer pilates — but like, on steroids.

When the workout started, we jumped right in with lunges on the right side. With one foot on the front of the reformer, and one foot on the center sliding deck, it really engaged the inner thighs, booty, and surprisingly the core too. Thankfully, toward the front of the room, there were tall sticks to hold on to for balance. We continued working the right side and moved from move to move including variations of push-ups, oblique crunches, hip abductions, and more. Each move have it’s own name and technique so it’s clear we were going to have to take the class a couple times before we really got the hang of it.

The class went fast — we mean really fast. We went from one move right into the next  with the goal transitioning as quickly as possible — and water beaks aren’t a thing in this class.

When we were finally done with the left side, we did the exact same movements on the left side in reverse order. Then, we (thankfully) ended class in a child’s pose. The sweetest, most deserving child’s pose ever.

Walking out of class we felt like every muscle was used. We worked muscles we didn’t even know we had. And, yes, we were sore for a few days after this class.
